Lawyer linked to fifth murder

KUALA LANGAT, Malaysia - Police have, for the first time, indicated that a lawyer currently being held in connection with the gruesome deaths of cosmetics queen Datuk Sosilawati Lawiya and three others is implicated in a fifth murder.

Selangor police chief Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar said the alleged mastermind of the grisly murders is also implicated in two missing person reports, one of which concerned the murder of a mechanic's wife, T. Selvi, 46.

Selvi's husband 54-year-old P. Balasundram had claimed earlier this week that the lawyer had cheated him in 2008 in a money-lending business they shared.

His wife was slashed to death by two men with machetes in front of their home in Taman Cempaka, Banting, in April last year.

Speaking to reporters here yesterday, Khalid said police had discovered two missing person reports lodged in Banting that they believe are connected to the lawyer.

He confirmed that one of the reports concerned Selvi's death.

Khalid said besides the two missing person cases, police were looking into seven commercial crime cases filed since 2005 involving a total of RM7.1mil (S$729,000).

He said the seven cases concerned land sales within the Kuala Langat district.

Asked if any policeman in the district had covered up the lawyer's alleged misdeeds, Khalid said: "If there is any bribery in the force, do not hesitate to lodge a report to me personally. The police will not protect those who are corrupted."

Meanwhile, the remand for all the eight suspects in the case, including the alleged mastermind, has been extended by another week
